Installation for CONSTRUCT: Space Transformed in the NoMa district of Washington (location at Tishman Speyer, 1100 First Street, NE)

As I made these sculptures I was thinking about how birdhouses are often designed and built to attract specific species of birds and also how fiercely territorial birds can be about their nesting habitats. By constructing hybrid forms that unite dissimilar halves from different birdhouse designs, these composite forms suggest both peaceful co-habitation, as well as alluding to potential conflict. Similar to the dynamic encountered everyday in the human structures that these forms reference, at its core, this work investigates notions of territoriality amid a diverse community.
