Anthony Cervino in POINT - a group show in Brooklyn organized by Radar Curatorial 3/26/2010

Sweet Lorraine Gallery
Show runs April 4 - 27, 2010
Opening reception: Friday, April 9 from 6-9 PM
In this group show bacon bras exist in the same world as satellite imagery, fine needlepoint and tanks bearing down on Tiananmen Square. The work in Point harnesses the power of focusing on a single object or concept by using a word, conversation, element, landscape, or direction to shine a light on the artist’s intent, all of which speak to a point in time. By focusing on the past these artist’s work speak to the present, and by focusing on the specific they speak to the universal.
The focus in these works may be on one particular element of our environment and the lifespan of that single shape or object: delicate bubbles about to burst, muscles deteriorating, an architectural portrait, a bruise forming/healing. Hi-lighting these specific changes in an object illustrates the fragility and longevity of the world around us and what effect we have on those elements. A portion of the work is about the historical. The present referencing the past is aptly illustrated here. A simple representation of pop culture’s power or a fad in history is now represented quite memorable and entertaining.

Language of Line 10/9/2009

New Wilmington Art Association presents:
Language of Line
November 5 – 30, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, November 6
Closing Reception and Artist Talks: Thursday, November 19
Curated by Ron Longsdorf
The idea of line can be interpreted both quite literally as well as conceptually. Language of Line explores a range of artists dealing with the use of "line" in their work. Some artists utilize line and grid in terms of city plans and the connotations of grid. Others are process based artists that trace lines to build up beautiful drawings. Some create dense elaborate installations of repeating lines.
Language of Line stems from a sense of our most primitive and basic mark making, the line. Line can be explored in a drawing practice, transfer of information, tracing, painting, cutting, bending, or forming. Language of Line will explore a range of mediums and practices from artists using line to deal with composition, content, process, and practice. Work will range from two-dimensional drawings, process tracings, cut paper works to wall installed material drawings, visceral painting and sculptural installations.
Artists include:
Stephanine Beck
Martin Brief
Anthony Cervino
Zach Chupa
Abby Donovan
Brian Patrick Franklin
Stephen Ruszkowski
Andrew Wapinski

Contemporary Sculpture Show at Eastern Michigan University 10/7/2009

Curated by John DeHoog and Brian Nelson, Contemporary Sculpture (October 5 - November 5, 2009) shows the work of eight established and emerging sculptors who address such current issues as consumption, waste, science, the body, war, and commoditization. Despite their topicality, these sculptures are largely abstract and highly attentive to the formal aspects of sculpture. Each artist represented acknowledges the traditions of sculpture while managing to upend customary expectations. Eileen Doktorski (Utah) and Mike McFalls (Georgia) use trash as both subject and medium, while Stephen Cartwright (Illinois) employs laser etching and rapid prototyping to explore the time honored subject of the natural landscape. Technically, the works range from the virtuosic precision of Dustin Farnsworth’s (Michigan) bentwood forms to the improvisational freedom of Travis Townsend’s (Kentucky) whimsical constructions. Other artists included in the exhibit are Maki Hajikano (Texas), Dora Natella (Indiana), and Anthony Cervino (Pennsylvania).
